big walk 1 - Martins Haven Deer Park Loop
I am very grateful now we have moved to have lovely nature on our doorstep- perfect for big old walks! And as I love a plan/a list/goal/ a programme - we have decided to do one big - 3hrs or > - walk every month at the least!
Sam chose this one - and with the help of Komoot we found a coastal walk a little bit south of where we are. Here is the link for all you Komoot heads. If you don’t know what Komoot is - it is an app/site that shows lots of awesome walks/runs/cycles in different areas - not an ad, just a fan. If anyone is wondering, “komoot” means simple and practical - I wondered and I looked it up. You’re welcome.
THE STATS
Komoot: ⏱02:57. 🗺6.88 mi/11km. 📈400 ft. 📉400 ft
Actual: SEE BELOW
THE START
We used our National Trust membership for some sweet sweet free parking - and made some rolls in the car. Thankfully remembered to bring a knife and some sandwich bags for a change -we’d stocked up on ingreds via Lidl en route- no using brute force to cut a cucumber! not today!
THE WALK
Not even 10minutes in saw a juicy looking caterpillar! Nature score! The views were amazing across to St Davids where we came from, and it was quite exciting to be on the other side to where we usually are.
Highlights:
Completely stunning views of the sea the whole way round with gorgeous blue skies.
Clear and easy path to walk without too much mud. But there was some:
TRAVERSE! TRAVERSE!
Seals! Saw some seals but was way too slow with my binocs to see any up close. Need to get quicker on the draw/not have them in my backpack the whole time.
THE HALFWAY POINT - LUNCH
We stopped at the headland for lunch, just across from Skomer Island where there are tonnes of puffins! I used my binocs and could see loads of them bobbing around on the water. Reminded me v much of Star Wars. Will need to return to take the boat over.
Was amazing sitting here watching Jack Sound - this is the name of the kraken filled treacherous water between the headland and Skomer island. I can’t seem to find who Jack was - if anyone knows praytell.
THE SECOND HALF
Just more lovely wonderful views and finally made it round to Marloes beach - completely blown away by the size of it! We didn’t swim this time as it was just a little chilly, but will be back!
THE END
⏱02.26. 🗺7.14 mi/11.5km - 30 minutes quicker than Komoot. Yeehaw. Got to take the wins where we can. Here is the route on Strava if you like.
If anyone has some Pembs walking reccos please share! Happy to add them to the list.
xoxo.
